Treatment Techniques

Integrative Dry Needling

Close up of Integrative Dry Needling being implemented for healing and pain relief at Big Ivy Physical Therapy and Wellness.

A highly effective form of Physical Therapy for the treatment of a multitude of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions. It is not acupuncture (traditional Chinese medicine); it is based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific study of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. A very fine filament needle is inserted through the skin and into the deeper tissues that are considered trigger points to your pain. Dry needling works by causing a micro lesion within the pathological tissue thus breaking up shortened tissues, inhibiting a reflex arc from the nervous system to the tissue, normalizing the inflammatory response, and centrally mediating the pain. The mechanical and neuromuscular effect provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal which ultimately reduces pain.

Manual Therapy

A variety of hands-on techniques are used to decrease pain, increase joint mobility, decrease muscle tension, and increase the recruitment of under-active muscles. There is no miracle technique that cures all people. Each person is different. Techniques are chosen by using a combination of scientific evidence of what works for a particular problem, client response to treatment, and client preference.

IASTM - Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

A type of manual therapy that targets soft tissue with the use of a tool that allows for a different effect than our own hands. This is a very gentle and comfortable technique which rarely (if ever!) leaves a mark or bruise on the skin.

Corrective Exercise

Corrective-Exercise-Big-Ivy-Physical-Therapy-Wellness.jpg

It may not sound exciting but this is the meat of what we do! This is where the magic happens! The client learns exercises that help control pain, increase mobility, strength and coordination and encourage healing of injured tissue. Many times our natural response to injury is to stop using that particular body part. Our brain also tends to shut down the function of injured areas, and unfortunately the strength, mobility and coordination lost do not come back without purposeful exercise. We also recommend a physical activity plan to address the client’s overall health and fitness, which helps them to heal faster and feel better!

SFMA - Selective Functional Movement Assessment

A movement based diagnostic system which systematically finds the cause of pain - not just the source - by logically breaking down dysfunctional movement patterns in a structured, repeatable assessment. This head to toes assessment helps to identify areas where the body is not working properly and to determine whether the problem is lack of mobility, stability, strength or motor control. The client will be given an exercise program to address their unique movement profile. In addition to helping alleviate pain, this assessment may help prevent injury and optimize performance.

Taping

Kinesiology tape, dynamic tape, strapping and athletic tape are used as needed to decrease pain, facilitate comfortable posture, and improve movement.
